This morning, I read Historian Iris Chang won many battles. The war she lost raged within. Like many, I was shocked at the news of her suicide. The article provided me at least some of the answers to how a brilliant, active, vibrant woman could kill herself. Of course, many of the answers that we all want continues to elude us.

Chinese in California exhibit opens:
"A new exhibit at The Bancroft Library illustrates the Chinese experience starting in 1850, when many of them left their homeland in hopes of sharing the Gold Rush riches of "Gam Saan," or "Gold Mountain," as they called California."
Whose reply card?
With great excitement, Laura and I have been anticipating replies to our wedding invitation. We were hoping that folks would think to write their names on the cards, even though the instructions were vague. Last Saturday we got a card postmarked from Oakland indicating that 2 persons will be coming -- but without any name. Anyone out there claim that card?

explicit exemption for police!
When I have seen the police bicycling on sidewalks, I have wondered what type of example they've been setting. Enforcing laws for everyone else, while themselves in the process of flaunting the laws. Now I know that the laws explcitly exempt the police. Hmm....
Could we live forever on this earth?
I really enjoyed Do You Want to Live Forever? because I was fascinated by how a brilliant outsider could synthesize vast bodies of interrelated facts to come up with startling (if unorthodox) theories about a profound topic as human aging and (im)mortality.
