I was hoping to glean more insight into the whole <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/interactiveu.berkeley.edu:8000\/rdhyee\/2002\/03\/12#2002OppenheimerLectureAndQuestionsOfEmergence\">\"levels of organization\" problem<\/a><br \/>\nthat has long fascinated me. I also used one of Gribben's examples of<br \/>\nwhat many call a \"sensitive dependence on initial conditions\" to use my<br \/>\ncomputer to plot the results. I was considering using <a class=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/matplotlib.sourceforge.net\/\">Matplotlib \/ pylab - matlab style python plotting (plots, graphs, charts)<\/a> but instead used Excel, which did the job fine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhat was the task in question? It was to iterate the function 2x^2-1,<br \/>\nwhere x is in between -1 and 1, to see how even a small change in an<br \/>\ninitial x leads to diverging values as we go through the iterations.<br \/>\nThat is, the small differences are magnified by the feedback loop of<br \/>\niteration. (I know that the last two sentences are not terribly well<br \/>\nwritten alas....) <\/p>\n<p>\nBesides getting to play with mathematically oriented computation, did I<br \/>\nactually glean any more insight about why there seem to be distinct<br \/>\nlevels of organization in our cosmos? I don't know. At first, I was<br \/>\ngoing to write that the sensitive dependence on initial conditions can<br \/>\ngive rise to boundaries -- but I can't say such a statement makes any<br \/>\nsense to me.
