{"id":48,"date":"2010-01-21T07:28:10","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T14:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hypotyposis.net\/blog\/?p=48"},"modified":"2010-01-23T09:22:25","modified_gmt":"2010-01-23T16:22:25","slug":"reflecting-on-those-lonely-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hypotyposis.net\/blog\/2010\/01\/21\/reflecting-on-those-lonely-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflecting on those lonely days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many years ago, I came across a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aip.org\/history\/einstein\/essay.htm\">famous quote of Albert Einstein's<\/a> that has since stuck in my mind:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My passionate sense of social justice and social responsibility has always contrasted oddly with my pronounced lack of need for direct contact with other human beings and human communities. I am truly a \"lone traveler\" and have never belonged to my country, my home, my friends, or even my immediate family, with my whole heart; in the face of all these ties, I have never lost a sense of distance and a need for solitude.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From my earliest days to well into my thirties, I often felt achingly lonely, an oddball.\u00c2\u00a0 Einstein was my childhood idol.\u00c2\u00a0 It was his life story that inspired me to start down the road of becoming a physicist.\u00c2\u00a0 His self-description as a \"lone traveler\" was\u00c2\u00a0 solace for me.\u00c2\u00a0  I used to hope that one day I'd grow up to be as special and singular a figure as Einstein.\u00c2\u00a0 (No lack of ambition there, eh?)<\/p>\n<p>Part of growing up for me is to accept that I am no Einstein (nor even a journeyman physicist for that matter).\u00c2\u00a0 A side effect of\u00c2\u00a0 self-acceptance:\u00c2\u00a0 I no longer feel so lonely.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I am really like the people around me.
