My household has subscribed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/chronicle\/\">San Francisco Chronicle <\/a> for years.  For a while, one of my housemates also subscribed to <i>The New York Times<\/i> -- which I much prefered  but found to be too expensive.  I typically read The Chronicle over breakfast.  If I'm out of the house for breakfast, I don't tend to read the paper that day -- the Chronicle is almost always a morning-only companion for me.  I sometimes wonder whether this means that reading the Chronicle is mostly a waste of time -- like channel surfing or mindless web browsing.  <\/p>\n<p>Still, I learn stuff when I read the paper.  And they certainly provoke various reactions in me.<\/p>\n<p>Articles that make me think that I should watch my bank very closely: <a title=\"Banks defeat privacy bill yet again \/ Speier vows to put stricter measure on state ballot\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/c\/a\/2003\/06\/18\/MN49330.DTL\">Banks defeat privacy bill yet again \/ Speier vows to put stricter measure on state ballot<\/a> and <a title=\"Wells dishing out bank data\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2003\/06\/18\/BU227817.DTL\">Wells dishing out bank data<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Article that makes me think that the current administration is really as bad as I have suspected:<br \/>\nE. J. Dionne's <a title=\"Framing the issue\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2003\/06\/18\/ED309615.DTL\">Framing the issue<\/a>  and the lastest column by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertscheer.com\/\">Robert Scheer<\/a>:  \"What Did He Know and When Did He Know It?\" (no permalink yet)<\/p>\n<p>An article that makes me want to organize a group of friends to go to the Oakland museums: <a title=\"Powerful glimpses of black history in Oakland exhibition\" href=\"http:\/\/sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2003\/06\/18\/DD32206.DTL\">Powerful glimpses of black history in Oakland exhibition<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Something that helps me think about what I can do for the many homeless in Berkeley: John Carroll's <a title=\"Well, sure, a house can be a home\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2003\/06\/18\/DD228208.DTL\">Well, sure, a house can be a home<\/a>, about the Berkeley Food and Housing Project<\/p>\n<p>A techno-lust inducing piece: <a title=\"Handspring unveils Treo 600 handheld \/ Wireless device to be available in the fall\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/chronicle\/archive\/2003\/06\/18\/BU203260.DTL\">Handspring unveils Treo 600 handheld \/ Wireless device to be available in the fall<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Forcing myself to respond to what I read, I hope, redeems some of my morning time.  (But isn't it just enough that I have fun reading the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article-list.cgi?key=DD&directory=\/c\/a\/2003\/06\/18\">Datebook<\/a>?)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you deal with what you read and learn in your local newspaper?
